From Darkness to Light

5-Day Devotional: From Darkness to Light
Day 1: Coming Out of Hiding

Reading: John 3:1-8

Devotional: Nicodemus came to Jesus under cover of darkness, protecting his reputation while seeking truth. Like him, we often approach Jesus secretly—curious but cautious, wanting answers but fearing what others might think. Jesus doesn't condemn our hesitation; He meets us exactly where we are. The Spirit moves like wind—unseen but undeniable. You don't need everything figured out before coming to Christ. Your questions aren't too difficult, your doubts aren't disqualifying. Jesus invites you to take that first step, even if it's in the dark. What matters isn't how you start, but that you start moving toward the Light.

Reflection: What keeps you from being open about your faith journey? What questions have you been afraid to ask?

Day 2: The Power of One Voice

Reading: John 7:40-52

Devotional: When the religious leaders demanded Jesus's arrest, Nicodemus spoke up—just one question, one voice of reason in a room full of hostility. He didn't preach a sermon or stage a protest; he simply asked, "Shouldn't we hear him first?" Growth isn't always dramatic. Sometimes it's one small act of courage. You may feel alone at work, in your family, or among friends who dismiss faith. But remember: one voice matters. God doesn't need your eloquence; He needs your willingness. When the Holy Spirit works within you, you cannot remain silent forever. That seed planted in darkness is beginning to break through soil.

Reflection: Where is God calling you to speak up, even if your voice shakes?

Day 3: Extravagant Love

Reading: John 19:38-42

Devotional: Seventy-five pounds of burial spices—a king's burial for a condemned criminal. Nicodemus didn't just show up; he showed up extravagantly. By touching Jesus's body, he made himself ceremonially unclean during Passover, the most sacred week of his religious life. He chose the real thing over the ritual. True encounter with Christ transforms our priorities. What once seemed essential—reputation, tradition, comfort—pales compared to knowing Him. Nicodemus gave everything because Jesus had given him everything. When Christ truly takes hold of your life, there's no such thing as "too much" when it comes to honoring Him. Extravagant love responds to extravagant grace.

Reflection: What is Jesus asking you to lay down today? What "sacred tradition" might be keeping you from deeper intimacy with Him?

Day 4: The Journey from Knowing to Going

Reading: Romans 10:8-17

Devotional: Nicodemus said, "We know you are from God," but only he went to Jesus. Knowledge without movement is just information. Many people know about Jesus—they know the stories, recognize His name, might even agree He was a good teacher. But knowing about Jesus and knowing Jesus are entirely different. Faith requires action. It demands we move from spectator to participant, from intellectual agreement to life-surrender. The disciples knew Jesus and still hid after the crucifixion. But Nicodemus, who started in secret, ended up standing publicly at the cross. Don't let fear keep your faith theoretical. Take the next step, however small.

Reflection: Is your faith more about knowing or going? What's one step you can take today to move toward Jesus?

Day 5: Standing in the Light

Reading: Ephesians 5:8-14

Devotional: Nicodemus's journey took him from midnight secrecy to midday clarity—from protecting his reputation to publicly identifying with a crucified Savior. This is the gospel's power: it brings us from darkness into light. You were made for the light. Whatever you're carrying in secret—shame, doubt, addiction, unforgiveness—Jesus invites you to bring it into His presence. The darkness loses its power when exposed to Light. You don't have to have it all together. You don't have to be perfect. You just need to be willing to step out of hiding. Christ has already paid the price for your freedom. Today can be your day to lay down what you've been carrying and walk in the light.

Reflection: What are you still hiding in darkness? Will you bring it into Christ's light today?

Closing Prayer: Lord Jesus, like Nicodemus, we come to You with questions, doubts, and fears. Meet us where we are. Give us courage to move from knowing about You to truly knowing You. Help us lay down everything that keeps us in darkness and walk boldly in Your light. Transform us from the inside out by Your Spirit. In Your precious name, Amen.
